As Washington debates how to establish a federal framework to govern AI, state leaders have stepped into the vacuum. Legislative powerhouses like California, New York, and Illinois have moved from policy laboratories to de facto national regulators testing distinct governance models, establishing crucial precedents, and defining the boundaries of algorithmic accountability.
Our Inaugural session featured a fireside chat with New York Assemblyman Alex Bores moderated by Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey, Host of A More Perfect Union. Asm Bores represents Manhattan’s East Side and is a leading national voice on AI policy, tech governance, and cofounder of "Who Decides." As the only NY state lawmaker with a degree in computer science, he effectively bridges the gap between technology, policy, and public trust.
He has championed pioneering legislation to address the risks and opportunities of artificial intelligence—including authoring the Responsible AI Safety and Education (RAISE) Act to establish safety protocols for frontier models, as well as landmark bills to curb AI deepfakes in elections and protect consumer data privacy. His work demonstrates how smart, adaptable policy can protect communities while serving as a catalyst for American leadership in innovation.
